What Causes Black Mould in Air Conditioners?

Black mould, also known as Stachybotrys chartarum, can grow in air conditioners due to a combination of factors such as high humidity, lack of proper maintenance, and the presence of organic materials for the mould to feed on. When an air conditioner is not properly cleaned and maintained, dust and other debris can accumulate on the coils and in the unit, creating a breeding ground for mould. If the air conditioner is not running efficiently, it can also create condensation which can lead to mould growth.

Additionally, if the air conditioner is located in a damp or humid area, such as a basement or a room with poor ventilation, this can also contribute to mould growth. It is important to regularly clean and maintain your air conditioner to prevent mould growth, and to address any issues of humidity or poor ventilation in the room where the unit is located.
