HERE'S A LIST COMMON ISSUES WE ARE ASKED TO FIX EVERYDAY

Heater won't turn on at all

You press the thermostat or remote and nothing happens — no fan, no ignition, no response whatsoever.

COMMON CAUSES:

Failed igniter, faulty thermostat, tripped safety switch, control PCB fault, no gas supply, power issue.

Heater blowing cold or lukewarm air

The fan runs and air flows through your vents, but the air is cold or barely warm — the heater is running but not heating.

COMMON CAUSES:

Ignition failure, blocked or dirty burner, faulty heat exchanger, gas valve fault, system overheating and tripping safety cutout

Gas heater smells — burning or gas odour

A burning dust smell at the start of the season is often normal. A persistent smell, a gas odour, or anything chemical requires immediate attention.

COMMON CAUSES:

Dust burning off at season start (normal), blocked flue, cracked heat exchanger, gas leak. A gas smell is always an emergency.

Heater making unusual noises

Banging, rattling, squealing, grinding or rumbling sounds coming from the heater unit or ducts when the system runs.

COMMON CAUSES:

Worn fan bearings, loose heat exchanger panels, blocked burner, debris in the unit, duct expansion and contraction, failing fan motor.

Flashing lights or fault codes

Your heater is displaying a flashing LED pattern or fault code on the controller — the system has detected a problem and shut itself down

COMMON CAUSES:

Varies by brand and flash pattern. Codes can indicate ignition faults, overheating, flame sensor errors, blocked flue, or PCB faults. Needs proper diagnosis — not just a reset.

Heater runs but some rooms stay cold

The heater is working and some rooms are warm, but one or more rooms consistently receive little or no heat from their vents

COMMON CAUSES:

Blocked or closed zone damper, damaged or disconnected ductwork, incorrectly balanced system, undersized duct run, faulty zone controller.

Heater keeps turning on and off (cycling)

The heater starts, runs briefly and shuts off repeatedly — never completing a proper heating cycle or reaching the set temperature.

COMMON CAUSES:

Dirty or blocked return air filter, overheating due to restricted airflow, thermostat fault, failing flame sensor, blocked flue.

Heater running but not reaching set temperature

The system runs continuously without your home reaching the temperature you've set — energy bills are climbing but comfort isn't improving.

COMMON CAUSES:

Dirty heat exchanger or burners, low gas pressure, degraded insulation on ducts, undersized system, blocked filters reducing airflow.

Weak airflow from vents

Air is coming from your vents but the flow seems weaker than it used to be — rooms are taking much longer to heat up.

COMMON CAUSES:

Blocked return air filter (most common), failing fan motor, blocked or collapsed ductwork, closed dampers, dirty indoor coil or heat exchanger.

Thermostat or controller not responding

You adjust the temperature or zone settings but nothing changes — or the controller display is blank, flickering or showing incorrect readings.

COMMON CAUSES:

Dead batteries, wiring fault between controller and heater, faulty controller unit, communication error between zones.

Pilot light keeps going out

On older gas heater models with a standing pilot light, the pilot won't stay lit or extinguishes repeatedly shortly after ignition.

COMMON CAUSES:

Faulty thermocouple, draughts near the unit, dirty pilot orifice, low gas pressure, failing gas valve. Older systems with repeated pilot issues may need assessment for replacement.

System overdue for servicing

Your heater is working but hasn't been professionally serviced in over two years — or you've never had it serviced since moving in.

COMMON CAUSES:

Unserviced heaters accumulate carbon deposits, develop small gas leaks, and can produce dangerous carbon monoxide without any visible symptoms. AS 4575 recommends servicing every two years.

FAQ

Gas heater repair — your questions answered

The most common causes are a failed igniter, a faulty thermostat, a tripped safety limit switch, or a fault with the control board. It can also be caused by a power interruption or a gas supply issue. Because several different faults produce the same symptom, a proper on-site diagnosis is needed to identify the exact cause and avoid unnecessary part replacement.

If the fan is running but the air isn’t warm, the most likely causes are an ignition failure, a blocked or dirty burner, or a fault with the gas valve. It can also happen when the system overheats — a safety cutout shuts off the burner to protect the unit, but the fan keeps running. This is often caused by a blocked return air filter restricting airflow.

A burning dust smell at the very start of the heating season is normal and usually clears within a few minutes — it’s just dust burning off components that haven’t been used for months. However, if the smell persists, is chemical in nature, or smells like gas or rotten eggs, stop using the heater immediately, ventilate the space and call a licensed technician. A persistent smell can indicate a cracked heat exchanger or gas leak.

Flashing lights or error codes mean the heater’s safety system has detected a fault and shut the unit down. Different brands use different flash patterns — for example, Brivis uses a series of short and long flashes, while Braemar uses numbered codes on a display. While these codes point technicians in the right direction, accurate diagnosis still requires on-site testing. Simply resetting the fault without finding the cause often results in the problem returning.

Australian Standard AS 4575 recommends gas ducted heaters be serviced every two years. Annual servicing is advisable for older systems or those that have been subject to heavy use. Regular servicing catches developing faults early, ensures the system is safe, maintains efficiency and is required to keep some manufacturer warranties valid. We recommend booking before the winter season — typically April or May — while availability is still good.

This depends on the age of the system, the nature of the fault and the cost of parts. Generally, systems under 12–15 years old are worth repairing if the fault is straightforward. Older systems with recurring faults, failed heat exchangers, or where parts are no longer available may be better replaced. We take a repair-first approach and will always give you honest advice — we won’t push you toward replacement if repair is the better option for your situation.

Our diagnostic assessment includes up to 30 minutes on-site to accurately identify the fault. A full service for a functioning heater is charged at a fixed, capped price. Repair costs vary depending on the fault, with labour charged per 30 minutes and parts quoted separately. We always provide a clear, itemised quote before any repair work begins. Yes. A cracked or deteriorated heat exchanger is the most common cause of carbon monoxide entering a home from a ducted gas heater. The heat exchanger separates combustion gases from the air circulated through your home — when it cracks, combustion byproducts including CO can enter the airstream. This is why carbon monoxide testing is included in every service we carry out, and why regular servicing matters regardless of how well the heater appears to be running.

Yes — these are among the most common gas ducted heater brands in Melbourne and our technicians have extensive experience with all three. We also service Vulcan, Bonaire, Stadt, Convair, Kaden, Omega and most other reputable brands. View our dedicated pages for Brivis, Braemar and Lennox for more information.
