Where should the thermostat be set at ?

Everyone is always looking for that perfect temperature, but in reality, there is no perfect temperature for everyone.

Many factors play into where to set the thermostat but the two main ones are:

Where are you most comfortable physically and where are you most comfortable financially? Usually, you are going to be forced to find a compromise between the two. This gets more complicated with the more people you have in your home. Rarely do two people have identical  temperature preferences and we’re willing to bet a lot of couples out there already know this.

So how do you decide where to set that thermostat on your wall?

Experimentation !!

Most people ask us as professional heating and air conditioning contractor to advise  them of the most suitable temperature setting, but in some cases what is my perfect temperature may not be yours. The only way for you to really know is by experimenting with your thermostat.
There are some guidelines to follow however:

  1. For winter season, generally start somewhere between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius
  2. For summer season (if equipped with Air Conditioner), start between 21 and 24 degrees Celsius.
  3. Once you have a start point adjust thermostat a degree up or down each day until you feel comfortable. Keep in mind the higher set temperature in the winter and the lower in the summer, the higher the utility cost will be.

Most people’s comfort zones are within these guidelines but what we really recommend is to make yourself as comfortable as possible within your budget.
Some people will value the lower cost in turn for a little less comfort while some would rather be more comfortable at a higher cost.
